Syria Truce Should Not Strengthen Terrorists: Iran’s Shamkhani

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said the ongoing nationwide ceasefire in Syria, which came into effect on Dec. 30, should not lead to reinforcement of terrorist groups in the Arab country.

The ceasefire should not be allowed to turn into an opportunity for Takfiri terrorists to reinforce themselves, Shamkhani said on Tuesday during a meeting with Syrian Prime Minister Imad Khamis in Tehran.

Khamis arrived in the Iranian capital on Tuesday morning at the head of a senior economic delegation.

The senior Iranian official further underscored the need for vigilance against potential plots against the successful anti-terror cooperation among Tehran, Moscow and Damascus.

Khamis, for his part, thanked Iran for its continued support for the Syrian nation and government and urged the need for a political solution to the ongoing Syrian crisis.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
