Iran’s Zarif, EU’s Mogherini Discuss JCPOA, Syria in Davos
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini Wednesday held talks on various issues, including the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.
In the meeting held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum underway in the Swiss city of Davos, the two diplomats exchanged views about the relations between the Islamic Republic and the European Union (EU) and the latest developments in the region and the world.
Zarif and Mogherini discussed issues ranging from ways to help end the Syrian crisis to the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPAO).
Heading a high-ranking delegation, Zarif arrived in Davos on Tuesday night to address a panel on Syria future. The Davos meeting will continue until Friday.
He plans to deliver a speech at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum and raise the issue of Syria and ways to resolve the prolonged crisis in the Arab country.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.
Diplomatic efforts to end fighting in Syria have gained momentum in recent weeks with the announcement of a ceasefire in the Arab country earlier this month.
It will be followed by a new round of peace talks between the Syrian government and foreign-sponsored opposition groups in Astana on January 23.
After his trip to Switzerland, Zarif will travel to the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur to participate in the upcoming emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) about the Rohingya Muslim crisis.
