EU’s Mogherini Says Renegotiation of JCPOA Not Possible

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said any attempt by the incoming US administration to renegotiate the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers will not be welcomed, stressing that the 28-meber bloc will continue to maintain the accord.

“On the Iran deal, we made very clear from the beginning and we will continue to do that, that first of all, one year after its implementation it's bringing good results to the rest of the world, including the Americans, (and) Europe,” Mogherini told Reuters on Wednesday.

“And the deal is not a unilateral (or) bilateral deal that can be renegotiated by one party. So it's a multilateral framework and we are ready protect and to preserve it," she added.

Earlier, she hailed the deal as "a major achievement" and said all participants have fulfilled their commitments, citing "a staggering 63 percent" rise in EU-Iran trade in the first three quarters of 2016 as one example of the results of lifting sanctions.

US President-elect Donald Trump, who will be inaugurated on Friday, has threatened to either scrap the nuclear agreement or seek a better deal.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France, and Germany) reached the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in July 2015 and implemented it in January last year.
