Syria Army Repulses Daesh Offensives in Deir Ez-Zor

DAMASCUS (Tasnim) – Syria’s army and its allies repelled two major attacks by Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorists in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor, inflicting heavy losses on them.

According to Tasnim dispatches, Syrian forces on Wednesday pushed back Daesh terrorists in the areas of al-Banourama and al-Sakan al-Jamei, respectively in south and southeast of Deir ez-Zor, after they attempted to launch attacks against the Syrian Army’s positions and fortifications in the province.

Fierce clashes continue between the Syrian government forces and the Takfiri militants near the two areas as well as the military airport of the province.

Additionally, Syrian and Russian warplanes pounded the positions of the terrorists in southern and eastern axes of the airport on Wednesday, forcing them to retreat from their fighting positions.

In a separate development, Syrian fighter jets targeted Ain al-Fijah village in Wadi Barada town, near Damascus, killing dozens of members of the Jabhat Fateh al-Sham terrorist group, formerly known as al-Nusra Front.

Military sources say the army plans to clear all the districts in Wadi Barada of the militants operating in the area, which is a main water source for the capital.

The terrorists have damaged water infrastructure in Wadi Barada and left some 5.5 million people in the capital and its suburbs facing water shortages, according to the UN.

Fighting has continued in Wadi Barada despite the start of a nationwide ceasefire, which is intended to pave the way for new peace talks in the Kazakh capital of stana on Jan. 23.
