Tehran, Moscow, Ankara Bring Views Closer on Syria: Russian Envoy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Russia's special envoy on Syria Alexander Lavrentiev said Iran, Russia and Turkey have held trilateral talks on Syria in the Kazakh capital, managing to bring their positions on the ongoing crisis in the Arab country closer together.

"Preparations are going rather intensively. Today we managed to hold consultations with the Iranian and Turkish sides, to have discussions in trilateral format and bring closer our positions on most of the issues on agenda," Lavrentiev said as cited by Sputnik on Sunday.

The Sunday meeting between the three countries, which has initiated a much-awaited round of Syria peace negotiations, lasted for 5 hours at Astana’s Marriott Hotel.

"Work on the final statement is still ongoing, you will hear everything tomorrow (January 23)," the Russian official added.

Hosted by the Kazakh government and overseen by Russia, Iran and Turkey, the talks hope to see the Syrian government and the armed opposition groups find a way out of the crisis that has plagued the Arab country for six years.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.
