World Powers Ignore Al Khalifa Regime’s Rights Violations in Bahrain: Activist
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior political activist based in London slammed world powers and international bodies for their support for the Manama regime and said they ignore human rights violations in the Persian Gulf country.
Speaking to Tasnim, Ali Mushaima pointed to the recent execution of three young activists in Bahrain on political grounds and denounced global powers and international organizations for their silence on the issue.
Some powerful and influential governments in the world see their interests in maintaining relations with the Al Khalifa regime, he noted.
They not only do not pressure the Bahraini regime to stop human rights violations but also support the Arab kingdom and therefore they are accomplice in the regime’s crimes, the activist added.
Sami Mushaima, Abbas Jamil Tahir al-Sami and Ali Abdulshahid al-Singace on January 15 faced the firing squad, six days after a court upheld their death sentences over allegations of involvement in a bomb attack some three years ago.
On January 9, Bahrain’s Court of Cassation upheld the death penalties given to the three young activists over allegations of killing a member of Emirati forces who had been assisting Manama in its suppression of Bahraini protesters in the northern village of al-Daih back in March 2014. Seven other convicts have also been sentenced to life in prison in the case.
The defendants had denied the charges.
After the executions, Bahrainis took to streets in cities and towns across the Persian Gulf country to condemn the ruling regime for the move.
Manama has given a heavy-handed security response to peaceful popular protests, which first began in early 2011. The clampdown has cost scores of lives. Later during the popular uprising, the regime called in Saudi and Emirati reinforcements to help it muffle dissent.
