Iran, Russia to Continue Consultations on Syria Peace Process

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Senior Iranian and Russian officials plan to continue consultations on mechanism to pursue their joint political and security initiatives for finding a solution to the crisis in the war-ravaged Syria.

Politics

Russian President Special Envoy on Syria Alexander Lavrentiev will arrive in Tehran on Sunday to hold talks with senior Iranian officials on the latest developments in Syria.

Lavrentiev plans to sit down with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani.

The Russian official will brief the Iranian official on President Putin’s views on the ongoing developments in the region and the new necessities for all-out cooperation in fighting terrorism and ending the Syrian crisis.

The meeting will come a few weeks after the latest round of Syria peace talks, organized by Iran, Russia and Turkey ended in Astana, Kazakhstan, without a major breakthrough.

However, the three sponsoring countries agreed on the establishment of a trilateral mechanism to support the ceasefire in Syria and monitor possible violations.
