Tehran to Continue Defense Cooperation with Moscow: Iranian Envoy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran's Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei said Tehran is willing to continue its defense cooperation with Moscow.

"Iran is interested in continuing its partnership with Russia and in developing it, including in the spheres that require the consent of the UN Security Council,” Sanaei told Russia’s Argumenty i Fakty newspaper on Saturday.

He further stressed that Iran is not prohibited from purchasing various types of weapons under the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France, and Germany) reached the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in July 2015 and implemented it in January last year.

On Saturday, Viktor Ozerov, the chairman of the Defense and Security Committee at the Russian Federation Council, said representatives of the committee are planned to travel to the Iranian capital Tehran on March 1.

He added that various issues, including arms sales’ contracts between the two countries as well as the ongoing crisis in Syria, will be discussed during the six-day trip.
