Brazilian Envoy Calls for Closer Tehran-Brasilia Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Brazil’s new ambassador to Iran hailed the growing relations between the two countries in various areas and said the South American country has chosen the Islamic Republic as a reliable partner in the Middle East.

Speaking at a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran on Sunday, Ambassador Rodrigo de Azeredo Santos highlighted areas of cooperation between Brazil and Iran, especially the field of energy.

He added that his country is not only seeking to export to Iran but also willing to import various goods from the Islamic Republic, particularly energy resources like oil.

The diplomat, who submitted a copy of his credentials to Zarif, further emphasized that Brazil has chosen Iran as a reliable partner in the region.

Zarif, for his part, pointed to Tehran’s willingness to promote relations with Brasilia in all spheres and said the two countries have numerous capacities to further boost the ties.

The remarks come against the backdrop of a new wave of interest in ties with Iran after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France, and Germany) on July 14, 2015 reached a conclusion over the text of a comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran's nuclear program and started implementing it on January 16.

The comprehensive nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.

Iran-Brazil relations date back to 1903. In 1957, they signed a cultural agreement, which came into force in 1962. The agreement marked the elevation of the Brazilian legation in Tehran to the condition of the embassy.
