No Obstacle to Cementing Tehran-Lisbon Ties: President Rouhani

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the Islamic Republic welcomes efforts to expand relations with the member states of the European Union, including Portugal.

Speaking in a Sunday meeting with the new ambassador of Portugal to Tehran, Joao Jose Corte Real, President Rouhani said there is no obstacle in the path of deepening Tehran-Lisbon relations in all fields.

"It is essential that cooperation between the two countries be further promoted not only in political and economic fields but also in cultural, scientific, technological and academic areas," he said.

The president added that Iranian and Portuguese private sectors have numerous capacities which should be tapped to boost cooperation between the two nations.

The Portuguese diplomat, for his part, emphasized that Lisbon is determined to expand its relations with Tehran in all fields of mutual interest.

During the meeting, President Rouhani also received the letter of credence of the new Portuguese ambassador to the Islamic Republic.
