Iran Builds New Naval Base on Oman Sea Coast

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Construction of Iran’s newest naval base in the coastal area of Pasabandar in the country’s southeasternmost corner has been completed, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari announced.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency on Sunday, the top commander said the Navy has completed development of Pasabandar naval base as well as two naval zones in Konarak littoral county, dubbed ‘Velayat-e-Jask’ and ‘Nabovvat’.

The Navy devised plans to develop two naval zones and three new military bases in the area as soon as it was ordered to boost presence along the coasts of Makran, Rear Admiral Sayyari added.

Pasabandar, also known as the coasts of Makran, is located in Iran's southeastern region, beside the Oman Sea.

The strategic area has attracted the attention of many Iranian decision-makers and military officials, particularly after Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei stressed the need for development of the region.

In November 2014, in a meeting with high-ranking Navy commanders, Ayatollah Khamenei said the issue of development of the coasts of Makran is a major task and plans for that region should be carried out more rapidly.
