TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Supporters of prominent Bahraini cleric Sheikh Isa Qassim continued a sit-in outside of his home, activists in the Arab country said.

They staged the sit-in on Saturday night in front of Sheikh Qassim’s house in the northwestern village of Diraz to express solidarity with the spiritual leader of the Shiite majority in the Persian Gulf country.

Holding placards and photos of Sheikh Qassim, the participants in the sit-in reiterated that they will defend the cleric against the plots hatched by the Al Khalifa regime.

In a statement on January 28, Bahraini religious scholars had called on the people to take part in nationwide rallies to express their solidarity with Sheikh Qassim, whose citizenship the Al Khalifa regime has revoked.

“We hereby pledge to shed the last drop of our blood in defense of religious and national leader, Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Ahmed Qassim,” the statement read.

It was released after the Manama regime’s mercenaries on January 26 attacked a sit-in near Sheikh Qassim’s residence, firing live bullets at unarmed protesters.

Thousands of anti-regime protesters have held demonstrations in Bahrain on an almost daily basis ever since a popular uprising began in the kingdom in February 2011.
