Supporting Palestine Cause of War on Syria: Speaker
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria’s parliament speaker described Damascus’ support for Palestine as the main reason behind foreign-backed militancy against her country.
The main reason behind the terrorist onslaught against Syria has been its backing for Palestine, Speaker of the People's Council of Syria Hadiya Khalaf Abbas said in a meeting with Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani in Tehran on Wednesday.
However, she underlined, Syria will remain steadfast in backing the Palestinian people.
The Iranian parliament speaker, for his part, hailed Syria’s “independent policies” which he said were th reason why terrorist groups launched a war against the Arab country.
Larijani also attributed Syria’s victories in the battle against Takfiri terrorist groups to the fortitude of its people and government.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.
According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
