US, Britain Directly Involved in Crackdown on Bahrainis: Opposition Figure

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior official with Bahraini opposition group the Islamic Action Society slammed the US and British governments for their major role in the ongoing heavy-handed clampdown on the Bahraini people.

The US and British governments are directly responsible for the oppression of the Bahraini nation, Head of the Political Bureau of the Islamic Action Society Rashed al-Rashed said in an interview with the Tasnim News Agency.

They not only have given the Al Khalifa regime the green light to use violence against civilians but also have devised and led its crackdown on the people, he stated.

The opposition figure went on to say that the British government, which used to secretly torture Bahrainis in prisons, now openly assists the Manama regime in the clampdown.

Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has been witnessing almost daily protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations.

Amnesty International and many other international rights organizations have frequently censured the Bahraini regime for the rampant human rights abuses against opposition groups and anti-regime protesters.
