Syria Army Tightens Noose on Daesh Terrorists in Homs

DAMASCUS (Tasnim) – The Syrian army and its allied forces on Tuesday pushed ahead with a major offensive against Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) in the central province of Homs to drive out the militant from the ancient city of Palmyra.

The advancing Syrian forces reached Palmyra’s southwestern gateway, located only 3 kilometers away from the Palmyra Triangle (Palmyra junction), according to Tasnim dispatches.

The army’s troops killed large groups of Daesh terrorists and destroyed two of their vehicles rigged with explosives at the gateway.

Separately, Syrian forces shelled the positions of the Jabhat al-Fatah Sham (formerly known as al-Nusra Front) terrorist group in the areas of al-Qaboon, Barza, and Teshreen on the outskirts of Damascus, killing and injuring scores of them.

The Arab country’s warplanes also targeted the terrorists’ field hospital in al-Qaboon.

Additionally, army troops continued to make gains in the northern city of al-Bab and managed to retake three more areas from the grip of the terrorists.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
