“According to the agreements and arrangements, the 5th City and Village Councils elections are supposed to be held fully electronically in all provinces except the provinces of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Kohgiluye and Boyer Ahmad, South Khorasan, and Qom,” Qassem Mirzaee Nekou said in a speech in a meeting of executive secretaries and inspectors of the central board.

“Necessary measures to hold the City and Village Councils elections fully electronically have been taken in agreements reached with the Guardian Council and the Interior Ministry,” he noted.

Earlier in February, Mirzaee Nekou had told Tasnim that 11,000 electronic voting machines will be used for the upcoming City and Village Councils elections.

The City and Village Councils elections is scheduled to be held simultaneously with the presidential election on May 19.

Registration of candidates for the City and Village Councils was held on March 13. Members of the councils across Iran are elected by public vote for a 4-year term.

According to article 7 of the Iranian Constitution, the local councils, together with the parliament, are "decision-making and administrative organs of the State".
