Iranian, Italian FMs Discuss Ties, World Developments

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Italian counterpart, Angelino Alfano, in a telephone conversation discussed a range of issues, including expansion of bilateral ties between Tehran and Rome and the latest developments in the region and the world.

In the telephone conversation on Wednesday, Zarif described as unacceptable the recent US unilateral military action against a Syrian army airbase over a chemical attack Washington baselessly blames on Damascus.

On Friday, the US launched a missile attack on the Syrian government’s Shayrat Airfield near Homs with 59 Tomahawk missiles.

The Iranian foreign minister called for establishment of an international fact-finding committee to investigate the gas attack and identify its perpetrators.

Alfano, for his part, briefed Zarif on the discussion and decisions made by foreign ministers of Group of Seven (G7) during their meeting in the city of Lucca, Italy, on April 11.

The two sides further explored ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries, and exchanged views on the latest regional and international developments.

Back in 2016, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Italy issued a joint statement and established a road-map for development of Tehran-Rome ties in political, economic, cultural, tourism, scientific, and technological fields.
