Strategic Area in Afghanistan’s Faryab Falls to Insurgents: Local Officials

KABUL (Tasnim) – A strategic area in Afghanistan’s Faryab Province has fallen to the hands of armed insurgents, local officials said on Wednesday.

According to Tasnim dispatches, the officials said the Aq Balaq District in Bilchiragh in the southern part of Faryab Province has fallen to armed insurgents.

Abdolkarim Uresh, a press official with Faryab Police, said the armed dissidents attacked the security forces in Aq Balaq with the cooperation of an individual affiliated with the Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) terrorist group.

He added that the security forces have withdrawn from the area to prevent casualties.

Over the past months, Taliban militants have launched attacks in various parts of Afghanistan.

Afghan government forces have launched operations against the Taliban in 18 provinces of Afghanistan as fighting has intensified since the start of the militants' spring offensive in April 2016.

In September 2016, several districts in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Paktia also fell into the hands of the Taliban.
