Iran, EU to Hold Talks on Export of Electricity, Gas: EU Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – European Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete said the issue of exports of energy from Iran to Europe is slated to be discussed with Iranian energy and oil ministers on Saturday.

Speaking at the 1st Iran-EU Business Forum on Sustainable Energy in Tehran on Saturday, Canete highlighted the close cooperation between Iran and the EU after the implementation of the nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), saying that six months after the enforcement of the agreement in 2016, Iran’s exports to Europe increased by 34 percent.

He further said that the issue of exports of gas and electricity from Iran to Europe will be discussed later today in meetings with Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh and Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian.

Speaking at the conference, Chitchian also said the Islamic Republic and the EU are in talks for exporting electricity to Europe via Turkey.

He said once a primary agreement is reached between Iran and the EU, the talks would become multilateral with Turkey in attendance.

The Iran-EU Business Forum on Sustainable Energy opened in Tehran on Saturday. The aim of the conference is to review progress within the Paris Agreement and discuss the role of clean energy in the transition to a low-carbon economy and urgent actions needed to adapt to the consequences of climate change.

Since the conclusion and implementation of the 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and six world powers, the EU and Iran have boosted bilateral relations and launched cooperation in different fields, including energy.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (China, France, Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, United States) reached a conclusion on the JCPOA in July 2015 and started to implement it in January 2016.
