Iranian, Azeri Presidents Want Joint Agreements Implemented

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Presidents of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan called for efforts to boost relations between the two neighbors in all fields, with both emphasizing the need for an immediate implementation of the agreements signed in the past.

In a telephone conversation on Monday evening, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev explored avenues for the expansion of Tehran-Baku ties.

Highlighting the fact that Iran sees no obstacle to closer political, economic, trade and cultural cooperation with Azerbaijan, President Rouhani contended that rapid implementation of bilateral deals between the two countries would deepen their regional interaction.

Predicting a “bright prospect” for the future of Tehran-Baku relations, the Iranian president also called for concerted action by the Islamic countries in the fight against terrorism and extremism.

For his part, Aliyev hailed as “extraordinary” the relations between Iran and Azerbaijan over the past four years, saying he has issued orders for accelerated efforts to carry out the joint projects with Iran.

Expressing satisfaction with the active presence of Iranian companies in his country’s energy, automotive and pharmaceutical industries, the Azeri president called for stronger relations with Iran to contribute to regional stability and security.

Earlier in the day, President Rouhani had congratulated the Azeri leader, government and nation on the Republic Day, which marks the founding of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan in 1918.

Iran and Azerbaijan have ramped up efforts in recent years to forge closer partnership in various areas.

In February 2016, Aliyev paid an official visit to Tehran, during which the two sides signed eleven memorandums of understanding and agreements to promote mutual cooperation in a range of fields.
