Gas Leak Likely Cause of Blast in Southern Iran: Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A local official said a gas leak was likely the cause of a recent explosion in a hypermarket in Iran’s southern city of Shiraz, which left 35 people wounded.

A gas leak or an explosion of flammable items stored in the supermarket could be the cause of the blast, Mohammad Farokhzadeh, the head of the fire department in Shiraz, said.

The blast occurred at 12.45 a.m. (2115 GMT) on Saturday.

Mohammad Reza Alimanesh, the head of the medical emergency center of Fars province, said the explosion injured 35 people, adding that the wounded had been sent to a nearby hospital.

The official said no one has been killed in the incident.

According to Tasnim dispatches, the walls of the store had collapsed because of the force of the blast, which also damaged nearby shops and houses.
