Boeing Seeking Permission from US Treasury for Deal with Iranian Airline

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – US aircraft maker Boeing announced that it still does not have a license from the US Treasury for a $3 billion contract with Iran Aseman Airlines, media reports said.

Aseman Airlines signed a final purchase agreement with Boeing in Tehran on Saturday for 30 737 Max jets and an option for 30 more, spokesman Amir Reza Mostafavi said, according to the Bloomberg.

“Boeing has applied to the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC, for a license to see the deal through,” Boeing said in an emailed statement.

Aseman Airlines is confident the deal will not face a political backlash in Washington, days after the US Senate voted to advance a bill that could bring new sanctions against the Islamic Republic, according to the report.

Aseman signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the US giant to buy 60 airplanes in early April.

The delivery of the first purchased airplane to the Aseman Airlines would take place in 2019, according to the airline.

On June 7, the US Senate voted to advance a bill that would impose new sanctions on Iran. The vote was 92-7 on a procedural motion to end debate on the Iran sanctions bill, clearing the way for a vote later on the passage of the legislation.
