Tunisia Says Ready to Broaden Iran Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – President of Tunisia Beji Caid Essebsi expressed the North African country’s readiness to expand and deepen relations with Iran.

In a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tunis on Monday evening, Essebsi hailed Iran as a civilized nation with a rich history, voicing his country’s preparedness to boost ties with Tehran.

He then congratulated Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on his reelection in the May 19 elections, and also offered his sympathy with Iran over the recent terrorist attacks in Tehran.

The Iranian diplomat, for his part, said President Rouhani has sent his regards, and thanked Tunisia for its hospitality.

The two officials then talked about the ways to strengthen Iran-Tunisia relations, and also discussed the regional issues.

Zarif arrived in Tunis on Monday evening in the final leg of his three-nation tour of North Africa, which took him earlier to Algeria and Mauritania.

Iran’s President Rouhani has repeatedly stressed his administration’s interest in boosting relations with the African, particularly the Muslim states.
