Yemen Army Repels Major Attack by Saudi-Backed Militants in Shabwah

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Yemeni soldiers and allied popular forces foiled a major assault by Saudi-backed mercenaries in the south-central province of Shabwah, inflicting major losses on them.

On Saturday, Saudi-backed militants suffered serious setbacks after they attempted to infiltrate into Osaylan district in Shabwah, a military official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Yemen’s Saba news agency.

Dozens of the mercenaries were killed and wounded during the counterattack in the area of Raqabat Al Sak in the district, the official added.

In a separate development on Saturday, the Yemeni troops targeted the positions of the Saudi-backed militants in the areas of Salah valey and Muthalath al-Himah in the southwestern Yemeni province of Taiz, leaving seven militants killed.

The attacks by the Yemeni forces were carried out in retaliation for the continued massacre of civilians by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen.

Since March 25, 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to Yemen’s fugitive former president.

According to Yemen’s Legal Center of Rights and Development, the Saudi campaign has claimed the lives of over 12,000 Yemenis and left more than 20,000 others wounded.
