Deployment of More NATO Troops Not to Boost Afghanistan’s Security: MP

KABUL(Tasnim) – The deputy speaker of the Afghan parliament said a recent decision by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to send additional forces to Afghanistan would not help boost security in the country.

According to Tasnim dispatches, Mohammad Nazir underlined that Afghanistan’s allied governments should focus on equipping the country’s military forces instead of sending additional troops.

“It would be better to allocate the cost of deploying foreign soldiers to Afghanistan to equipping Afghan forces, particularly the air forces,” the parliamentarian said.

He went on to say that equipping Afghan forces has yielded positive results in the past, adding that the forces can ensure the security of the country by themselves.

NATO announced Thursday that it would send additional forces to Afghanistan.

“Our military authorities have requested a few thousand more troops for the mission in Afghanistan and today, I can confirm that we will increase our presence in Afghanistan,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated ahead of the of NATO Defense Ministers meeting in Brussels.
