People Mark Anniversary of Mass Murder of Muslims on 'Death Road' in Europe (+Photo)

More than 5,000 participants from all over the world on July 08, 2017 attended the "March of Peace" (March Mira) from Nezuk town on forest road known "death road" which was used by Bosnians who wanted to escape to safe zone of Tuzla, to commemorate the victims of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide in which some 8,000 Bosnians were killed, in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the 1990s and after dissolution of Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Herzegovina like other Balkan countries declared independence and Party of Democratic Action (SDA) lead by Alija Izetbegović took power in the country.

Establishment of a Muslim country in the heart of Europe resulted serval attacks from Serbs and Croats.

Both the West and East blocks at the time tried to partition Bosnia and attach Serbian and Croatian parts of the Bosnia to Republic of Serbia and Republic of Croatia.

As a result of Iran and Muslims’ support during the 1990s wars, Bosnian Muslims who had the majority, overcame the separatists but unfortunately 49 percent of the country came under ruling of autonomous Republic of Srpska under Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Before the war, Serbs owned just 33 percent of the land in the country.

In the meantime, Croats occupied 33 percent of the country and now have much more power they deserve in the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Croats owned just 17 percent of Bosnia before the war.

The power and the land that Serbs own in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the result of mass murders they committed under the support of world powers in the 1990s.

Serbs tried to occupy the cities of Muslims around them and raided the isolated pockets of Bosnian government-held territory in eastern Bosnia, named Srebrenica.

Serb forces besieged Srebrenica and killed 8372 Muslim men on July 11, 1995. They have also raped thousand women in the region. The event have been recognized as genocide by two international courts of justice and named the most brutal war after the Second World War in the Europe.

History of Mars Mira

The March of Peace is an annual peace walk in Bosnia and Herzegovina organized in memory of the victims of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide. The march gathers thousands of Bosnians and foreigners each year. The first march was held in 2005, to mark the tenth anniversary of the genocide. The campaign lasts three days, culminating in the participants' arrival to the village Potočari, where the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial-Cemetery is located. The participants arrive a day prior for the mass funeral that occurs for those victims who have been found from the previous year. The search for bodies of the victims is ongoing every year.

The event, which has been organized since 2005, marks the killing of Bosniaks who survived after the fall of Srebrenica in July 1995 and tried to reach territory controlled by the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Peace March became an international event, and a large number of people from around the world joined the March. In 2012, there were nearly 8,000 participants.

The march usually begins in the village Nezuk by Sapna on or around 8 July.

In addition to the pedestrian campaigns, support also comes from participants who engaged in Cycling Marathons.
