Spokesman: No Plan for Meeting between Iran’s Zarif, US’s Tillerson

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Friday dismissed speculations at social media about possible meeting between Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and US Secretary of State Rez Tillerson during Zarif visit to New York.

“Essentially, Mr. Zarif had no plan to meet Rex Tillerson,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said, dismissing social media rumors about a demand for Zarif's meeting with his US counterpart.

Also, the Iranian top diplomat, who is in New York for a speech at the United Nations, told the New Yorker in an interview published on Wednesday that he had not yet asked for a meeting with US Secretary of State.

“I haven’t asked for a meeting, and I don’t think I will.”

Zarif added, “We’re not opposed to the possibility of a meeting between us and Secretary Tillerson if it is necessary for the implementation of the nuclear deal…if we succeed in seeing good faith on the part of the United States in the implementation of the nuclear deal, then it would be a foundation and not the ceiling. And it would be possible to engage in other areas. We haven’t seen that yet.”
