Iran, Russia Eye Boosting Cooperation in Nuclear Fuel Production
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi in a trip to Moscow held talks with senior Russian officials on a range of issues, including joint production of nuclear fuel.
Kamalvandi and Russian officials talked about Tehran-Moscow cooperation in the first unit of a nuclear power plant near the Iranian southern port city of Bushehr and construction plans for other units of the power plant.
In meetings with the Russian state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom’s officials, Kamalvandi also discussed Iran and Russia’s joint production of nuclear fuel and stable isotopes.
Iran’s only nuclear power plant in Bushehr, which produces 1,000 megawatts of electricity, became officially operational and was connected to Iran’s national grid in September 2011.
The Russian-Iranian agreement on the civil use of nuclear energy, followed by a deal to construct Iran’s first nuclear power plant, dates from 1992.
In 2014, the two countries signed an agreement on building two new nuclear reactors on the Bushehr site.
In November that year, Tehran and Moscow also struck a deal to build eight more nuclear power plants in Iran.
