Iranians Stage Rally in Tehran in Support of Palestinians, Rohingya Muslims

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian people from all walks of life staged a massive demonstration in the capital on Friday to condemn the recent Israeli crimes against the Palestinian nation and also the atrocities committed against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

Participants in the demonstration, held in Tehran after Friday prayers, decried recent Israeli attacks against Palestinians and the regime’s moves to desecrate al-Aqsa Mosque.

In a statement issued at the end of the rally, the protestors said international organizations’ silence on the oppression of Palestinians and Rohingya Muslims demonstrates their dependency upon the hegemonic powers.

The demonstrators also called on the Iranian foreign ministry to voice the Iranian nation’s protest at the crimes committed by the arrogant powers.

Several Palestinians have been killed and hundreds more injured in recent weeks amid mass protests over new Israeli security measures at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Muslims have been refusing to hold prayers at the mosque and prayed in the streets around the Old City for almost two weeks after Israel installed security equipment, including metal detectors and cameras, at the sacred compound following a deadly shooting incident there on July 14.

Rohingya Muslims have also been subjected to executions, rape, and arson attacks since October, according to refugees and rights groups.

Myanmar’s government denies full citizenship to the 1.1 million-strong Rohingya population and instead brands them as “illegal immigrants” from Bangladesh, even as many trace their lineage in Myanmar back generations.

The Rohingya Muslims who have fled to Bangladesh during decades of violence in Myanmar, as many as 500,000, are not recognized as citizens by Dhaka, either.
