10 Brigades Established in Iran’s Armed Forces to Combat Terrorism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran has formed 10 rapid reaction brigades to boost its counterterrorism efforts, President Hassan Rouhani’s pick for the post of defense minister said.

Speaking in a meeting with members of the parliament to outline his plans for the Defense Ministry on Monday, Brigadier General Amir Hatami highlighted Iran’s significant role in the “axis of resistance” and in ensuring regional security.

The general added that Iran has established 10 rapid reaction brigades, 5 in the Army Ground Force and 5 in the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Ground Force, for more serious fight against terrorism.

He further described a push to boost the country’s missile capabilities and air defense power as a high priority on his agenda if he wins the parliament's vote of confidence.

Considering the hostile attempts to “neutralize Iran’s missile power”, the Defense Ministry would prioritize plans to upgrade the country’s missile capabilities as well as its aerial, air defense, naval and ground force capabilities, he stated.

The general also said he would try to promote cooperation between the Defense Ministry and the private sector after assuming the post.

Moreover, he added, the Defense Ministry will also push for stronger “defense and general diplomacy” and for more bilateral agreements with other countries in order to ease hostilities.

Iranian lawmakers are going to start debates on the credentials and backgrounds of the proposed ministers on Tuesday.
