Iranian, Turkish Deputy FMs Discuss Closer Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ebrahim Rahimpour and his Turkish counterpart Umit Yalcin held talks on a range of issues, including ways to boost Tehran-Ankara relations in all political, cultural and economic areas.

Speaking at the meeting held in Ankara on Tuesday, Rahimpour hailed the growing relations between Iran and Turkey, saying that due to the determination of the two countries’ high-ranking officials, “constructive consultations” between the two neighbors have developed in the current year.

Consultations between political, cultural, economic and security officials of Iran and Turkey can pave the grounds for closer bilateral cooperation, he added.

The Iranian diplomat also expressed the hope that during an upcoming visit to Iran by Turkey’s president, major steps would be taken to reach the goals previously set by the two countries.

Yalcin, for his part, said Tehran-Ankara ties are growing in the right direction, adding that closer dialogue between the two countries can help boost bilateral trade.

During the meeting, the two diplomats also exchanged views about the latest developments in Syria and the fight against terrorism in the Middle East.

Tehran and Ankara enjoy cordial bilateral relations. Despite some differences on regional issues, Iran and Turkey are two sides of a trilateral mechanism to maintain a ceasefire in certain parts of Syria.

Tehran-Ankara-Moscow cooperation has led to several successful indirect talks between the Syrian government and the opposition groups in the Kazakh capital of Astana.
