Iranian, Lebanese Figures Discuss Regional Security Initiative

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian deputy foreign minister and a former Lebanese president called for joint efforts to develop an initiative for security in the Middle East region.

In a meeting in Beirut on Tuesday evening, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari and ex-Lebanese president Amine Gemayel discussed a range of bilateral, regional and international issues.

Expressing regret at the complicated situation in the region and the threat of disintegration, Gemayel stressed the need for a practical initiative for regional security.

For his part, the visiting Iranian diplomat welcomed the idea of regional security initiative, referring to a plan proposed by Foreign Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif on the establishment of a forum for regional dialogue.

Jaberi Ansari also voiced Iran’s willingness to maintain balanced ties with all elements of the Lebanese society.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister has met senior Lebanese officials, including President Michel Aoun and Secretary-General of Hezbollah Seyed Hassan Nasrallah, during his stay in Beirut.
