Iraqi Forces Seize Tal Afar from Daesh

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iraqi forces have driven Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorists from the symbolic town of Tal Afar, the Iraqi military said Sunday, clearing one of the extremist group’s few remaining strongholds in the country.

Operations continued against the Takfiri militants in a handful of surrounding villages, the military’s statement said, Wall Street Journal reported.

The announcement comes just one week into the battle for Tal Afar, which once served as a way station between the group’s de facto capitals Mosul and Raqqah.

Army officials said Saturday night that they were nearly in full control of Tal Afar’s historic center, moving toward the northern neighborhoods still held by the terror group.

Tal Afar, which had a pre-war population of about 200,000, was the latest objective in the war on Daesh following the recapture of Mosul after a nine-month campaign that left much of the city, the biggest in northern Iraq, in ruins.
