Iran Has Plenty of Options, Uses Them Only for Defense: President
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran possesses a wide range of levers of power, but has practiced self-restraint over the past four decades and has used those levers only for defense, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday.
As a great country, Iran has huge power, but at the same time has great patience due to its civilizational background, President Rouhani said at a weekly cabinet session in Tehran.
“We have many levers (of power) and can use them, but have never employed them against anybody or any neighbor in these 40 years (after the victory of the Islamic Revolution),” he underlined, stressing that Iran’s power has been for defense alone.
The president also called for joint efforts to stem violence in the region and bring about peace, expressing the hope that the auspicious occasion of Eid al-Adha would inspire Muslim nations to push for an end to bloodshed in the region.
Eid al-Adha is a manifestation of ending bloodshed in the region, creating stability and progress, and promoting Islamic affection, he added.
Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice) is one of the biggest religious festivals of Muslims.
In his messages to the Muslim states on the holy event over the past four years, the Iranian president has expressed the hope that peace and friendship among Muslim nations would thrive by taking advantage of the Islamic teachings.
