Iran Celebrates Eid al-Adha

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Muslim people of Iran are celebrating Eid al-Adha holiday on Friday, one of the two most important festivals of the Islamic calendar.

Society/Culture

Muslim worshippers took part in countrywide prayers in Iran on Friday morning on the festive occasion of Eid al-Adha, which marks the end of the Hajj season.

Together with Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha is one of Islam's holiest festivals celebrated annually around the world and an official holiday in the Muslim-majority countries.

In the Islamic calendar, Eid al-Adha occurs on the 10th day of the Dhu al-Hijjah.

It marks the willingness of Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son Prophet Ismail on God’s command.

Muslims mark the holiday by slaughtering animals such as sheep, goats, cows and camels. The meat is shared among family and friends and also donated to the poor.

Faithful across the world have marked the festival, which comes as the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia draws to a close.
