Syria Army Retakes Key District in Deir Ez-Zor

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian troops seized a suburb of the city of Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria on Sunday, tightening the noose around Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) militants, a military source said.

Russia’s RIA news agency cited the unnamed source as saying that the Syrian army cut the Daesh terrorist group’s main supply line in the city on Sunday after taking control of the al-Jafra district.

Oil-rich Deir ez-Zor province, which borders Iraq, is Daesh’s last major foothold in Syria.

On Saturday, Syrian government forces also seized control of the areas of Howeijet and al-Mrai’eyeh in the southeastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

Last week, Syria’s army and allied fighters broke a years-long Daesh siege of the city of Deir ez-Zor, entering two government-held sections of the city that had been cut off from each other.
