President Rouhani Hopes for Closer Tehran-London Trade Ties
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reiterated his administration’s policy to promote relations with European countries and said the Islamic Republic is ready to deepen ties with Britain in all spheres, economy in particular.
Speaking at a meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May in New York on Wednesday, Rouhani described facilitating banking cooperation as an important step in the development of economic relations between the two countries.
“We hope to witness the establishment of appropriate banking relations to develop Tehran-London economic ties,” he said.
He added that the Islamic Republic is ready to engage in constructive cooperation with the United Kingdom in other areas, including regional issues.
The British premier, for her part, called for closer ties between Tehran and London in diverse fields.
May also voiced her support for the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and noted that she had explicitly stated at the UN that the JCPOA was a very important agreement to which Britain is determined to remain committed.
There has been a new wave of interest in ties with Iran since Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 reached a conclusion over the text of the JCPOA and started implementing it on January 16, 2016.
The comprehensive nuclear deal terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.
However, Iranian officials have complained about the failure of the other side, especially the US, to fully implement the accord, as Iran still has problems in its banking transactions with other countries.
