Nuclear Chief: Iran to Stop Implementing Additional Protocol If JCPOA Abrogated

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran said the country will stop voluntary implementation of the Additional Protocol if the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is annulled.

In an interview with IRIB, Ali Akbar Salehi said Iran’s voluntary implementation of the Additional Protocol will continue as long as the JCPOA is in effect.

Iran will abide by the IAEA safeguards agreement and the Additional Protocol so long as the JCPOA is being implemented, because the country is now carrying out the Additional Protocol, which has not been ratified by the Iranian parliament yet, voluntarily, he explained.

In August, Iran’s mission to the International Atomic Energy Agency cautioned against the dire consequences of illegal pressures on the UN nuclear agency after the US UN envoy travelled to Vienna to press the IAEA on her reading of Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA.

The statement said Iran is fully aware of its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the Additional Protocol and the JCPOA, the nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) , and remains committed to their terms.

However, Iran will not allow a specific country to take advantage of the rules for its own political objectives, it stressed.
