Syrian Jets Inflict Losses on Daesh Southeast of Deir Ez-Zor

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian warplanes pounded Daesh (ISIL) positions in the southeastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, inflicting major losses on the terrorists in the eastern province.

A military source told SANA that the airstrikes targeted the gathering centers of the Daesh terror group in the areas of al-Muhassan, Boqrous Fouqani, Boqrous al-Tahtani and al-Boulail.

Scores of the terrorists were killed in the airstrikes. Also, a number of their machine gun-equipped vehicles were destroyed.

The developments came after Syrian army soldiers, supported by allied fighters from popular defense groups, recently liberated the strategic eastern city of al-Mayadin from the clutches of Daesh as they continue to mske more territorial gains and deal stinging blows to the extremists in Deir ez-Zor.

The loss of al-Mayadin, located about 44 kilometers southeast of Deir ez-Zor, is the latest in a string of blows to the Daesh Takfiris, who are on the verge of losing Raqqah, their de facto capital in Syria, to US-backed militiamen from the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Daesh overran large parts of Deir ez-Zor province, including its many oil fields, in mid-2014 as it seized swathes of land in Syria and neighboring Iraq.

By early 2015, the Takfiri terrorists were in control of some parts of the city of Deir ez-Zor and besieged the remaining parts, which were under government control. It is estimated that 100,000 people remain in the government-held parts of the city.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. The Syrian government says the Israeli regime and its Western and regional allies are aiding Takfiri terrorist groups wreaking havoc in the country.
