Japan Expresses Support for JCPOA

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono expressed his country’s support for the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

During a phone conversation on Monday night, Kono told his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif that the Islamic Republic plays a constructive role in regional stability, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported.

Zarif, for his part, hailed Japan's stance, adding that Iran has honored its commitments under the deal and will continue to do so.

It came after US President Donald Trump, speaking from the White House on Friday, said he would not recertify that Tehran is complying with the nuclear agreement, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Federica Mogherini, the foreign policy chief of the European Union, who was one of the key participants of the nuclear talks in 2015, denounced Trump's decision in decertifying Iran's deal.

“A nuclear agreement which is working well cannot be dismantled,” she said.
