White House Bites Back at Bush Family Legacy after Trump Criticism
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The White House denounced the legacies of former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush on Saturday after it was reported the father-son duo spoke harshly of incumbent US President Donald Trump in an upcoming book.
“If one presidential candidate can disassemble a political party, it speaks volumes about how strong a legacy its past two presidents really had,” the White House said in a statement obtained by CNN.
The White House also took a swipe at George W. Bush over the Iraq War, calling it was "one of the greatest foreign policy mistakes in American history."
"President Trump remains focused on keeping his promises to the American people by bringing back jobs, promoting an America First foreign policy and standing up for the forgotten men and women of our great country," the White House added. Trump's own past sentiment on the Iraq War became a subject of debate during the 2016 campaign, with critics and journalists accusing him of trying to rewrite history by saying he opposed the 2003 invasion before it happened.
In the upcoming book titled, "The Last Republican," by Mark Updegrove, George H.W. Bush calls Trump a "a blowhard," and George W. Bush says that his Republican successor "doesn't know what it means to be president."
The quotes were published Saturday by CNN and the New York Times, both of which spoke to the Updegrove.
"If you look at the Bush family, it makes perfect sense. Donald Trump is everything that the Bush family is not," Updegrove told CNN. "George Bush grew up thinking about the greater good. Donald Trump is manifestly narcissistic. It's part of his brand. And that brand is the antithesis of the Bush brand."
