Iranian Official, Austrian Envoy Discuss Closer Trade Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of Iran’s Chamber of Commerce Gholam Hossein Shafei and Austrian Ambassador to Tehran Stefan Scholz exchanged views about ways to promote bilateral relations between Tehran and Vienna in diverse fields, economy in particular.

Speaking at the meeting, held in Tehran on Tuesday, Shafei said Iran’s relations with Austria have been special compared to its ties with other member states of the European Union.

“Moreover, in sanctions era, when we were facing many restrictions, our relationship with Austria remained in place,” he noted.

“Areas of our cooperation with Austria are diverse,” he said, adding that Austrian companies have always been active in the Islamic Republic and Iranian economic activists have also had good ties with Austrians.

Scholz, for his part, said one of the most important goals he is pursuing in his tenure in Iran is to promote bilateral trade between the two countries.

The remarks come against the backdrop of a new wave of interest in ties with Iran after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 reached a conclusion over the text of a comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran’s nuclear program and started implementing it on January 16, 2016.

The comprehensive nuclear deal, known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.
