Police Seize Large Drug Cargo in Iran in Single Operation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Police forces in Iran’s northern province of Qom seized a large cargo of opium in a single operation on Saturday.

Society/Culture

Following an undercover operation and in joint operation with Tehran police, police forces confiscated around 500 kilograms of opium from a truck in the province of Qom on Saturday, provincial anti-narcotics police commander, Colonel Gholam Abbas Balfakeh said.

According to the commander, the haul of drugs was hidden under a cargo of particle boards in the truck, which came from the eastern provinces of the country.

Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug-trafficking over the past three decades.

The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of thousands of Iranian police forces over the past three decades.
