Iran-Syria Coalition Strategic, Based on Mutual Respect: Syrian Adviser
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - A senior adviser to the Syrian Prime Minister referred to Tehran and Damascus cooperation in fighting against Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL) in the past few years, and said that Iran and Syria coalition is strategic.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Abdul-Qader Azouz, who is also a professor of politics noted that “Syria coalition with the Islamic Republic of Iran is a strategic coalition which is also based on mutual respect for sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of (each other) governments.”
He reiterated that Iranian military advisers’ presence in Syria is in line with countries’ responsibility to protect global security and an attempt to establish peace in the war-torn country.
The Syrian official hailed collapse of Daesh’s self-proclaimed caliphate in Iraq and Syria, and said, “Undoubtedly, by victory over Daesh terrorist group in Syria, the ‘Axis of Resistance’ has entered the post-terrorism phase today.”
On November 19, the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group was flushed out of its last stronghold in Syria’s Al-Bukamal. The city’s liberation marked an end to the group’s self-proclaimed caliphate it had declared in 2014.
Daesh militants made swift advances in northern and western Iraq over the summer of 2014, after capturing large areas of Syria.
But the timely support by Iran helped Syria and Iraq fight off Daesh. In addition, formation of military units by volunteers in Iraq, known as Hashd al-Shaabi or Popular Mobilization Units, blunted the edge of Daesh offensive and later made the terror group withdraw from the territories it had occupied.
