TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hailed the national team’s championship in the world para-powerlifting games in Mexico as a sign that young Iranian athletes can shine at the world under any conditions.

In a message on Friday, the president congratulated the disabled athletes on winning the title in 2017 World Para-Powerlifting Championships in Mexico.

“After the championship of Iran weightlifting team at the United States 2017 World Championships, our para-powerlifting team’s powerful and early championship at the Mexico Championships doubled the great Iranian nation’s happiness,” the president wrote, according to his official website.

“These valuable victories once again showed that talented, capable young people of this land are capable of conquering the summits of pride in various athletic fields, and need more attention,” he added.

Iranian athletes won several medals in the para-powerlifting competitions in Mexico. On Friday, Siamand Rahman claimed a gold medal in the men’s over 107kg.

After achieving what no other man had before by breaking the 300kg barrier at Rio 2016 to set a new world record of 310kg, most fans were expecting the Iranian to make history again. However, the two-time Paralympic champion was satisfied with just winning gold.
