Iran’s Defense Minister Due in Moscow Soon: Report

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami will pay an official visit to Russia in the near future, Russian media reported.

General Hatami will travel to Moscow soon to hold talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoygu, RIA Novosti reported.

The Iranian general plans to discuss the military cooperation between Tehran and Moscow and the latest developments in the region, according to the report.

Speaking to Tasnim on Saturday, the Iranian defense minister described the growing relations between Tehran and Moscow as “strategic” and said the two countries have taken major strides in boosting their military ties.

He said the Islamic Republic views its relations with Russia as strategic because the ties are comprehensive and cover all political, economic and military fields.

“In terms of military and defense cooperation, Iran and Russia have taken good steps,” he stressed, adding that the national interests of the two countries are considered in the efforts to deepen the bilateral relations.

In a telephone conversation back in October, the Iranian and Russian defense ministers explored avenues for the enhancement of military cooperation between Tehran and Moscow in the fight against terrorism and extremism.

The cooperation between Iran and Russia in Syria helped eradicate the so-called caliphate of the Daesh (ISIL) terror group from the Arab country.
