TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The death toll from a suicide attack on a cultural center in the Afghan capital of Kabul rose to at least 40 on Thursday noon, while officials expect the number of casualties to rise.

Local sources quoted Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry as confirming that at least 40 people, including children and women, have been killed in the deadly bombing at Kabul’s Tebyan center on Thursday morning.

Dozens of other civilians have been also wounded in the terrorist attack in Pule Sokhtia area of Kabul.

Social activists had gathered at the cultural center for a meeting when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives at around 10:30 am local time.

Officials believe that that more than one assailant, maybe three suicide bombers, have carried out the attack that also involved the use of grenades.

The Taliban militant groups has denied any connection with the attack.

Officials say the death toll may increase, as a number of the injured are in critical conditions.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani called the attack a "crime against humanity".

In a statement, he said, "The terrorists have attacked our mosques, our holy places and now our cultural center."
