UN Participation in Sochi Congress on Syria in Its Interest: Russian Envoy to UN

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia expressed hope that the UN will participate in the Syrian National Dialogue Congress to be held in the Russian city of Sochi on January 29-30.

Nebenzia made the remarks at the conclusion of a close-door meeting held in the UN Security Council on Tuesday.

Russia Today News Network quoted the Russian envoy as saying that Sochi Congress is not a single event, but an activity that would support the process led by the UN on Syria.

The Russian envoy questioned the progress of talks in Geneva, noting that participation of the UN in Sochi talks is in its interest

The three guarantor states of the cessation of hostilities agreement in Syria, (namely Russia, Iran and Turkey) have agreed during Astana 8th Meeting on cooperation to prepare for holding the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi on Jan. 29-30 with the participation of all spectrums of the Syrian society.

On November 22, presidents of Iran, Russia and Turkey gathered in Russia’s Sochi for talks on Syria peace.

The summit was part of political efforts by Iran, Russia and Turkey to ensure peace in Syria, which is recovering from a civil war that started in 2011 and turned into a brutal militancy including a large number of terrorist groups.
