Iraqi Forces Begin Mop-Up Operation South of Mosul

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iraqi military forces have launched an operation to flush the remnants of the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group out of regions near the northern city of Mosul, security officials said.

The operation to cleanse southern areas of Mosul began on Saturday, as the security forces are searching for fugitive members of Daesh in Albu Saif region.

Raialyoum quoted military sources as saying that the operation includes army troops and police forces, backed by the army’s artillery unit and fighter jets.

A local police commander said six Daesh terrorists were killed on Saturday in Hammam al-Alil, which lies by River Tigris south of Mosul.

In mid-November, Iraqi forces captured the border town of Rawa, the last remaining town under Daesh control, marking the collapse of the terror group’s self-proclaimed caliphate in Iraq.

Since then, Iraqi military units and popular forces have been hunting for remaining armed members of the terrorist group in different parts of the country.
