Revival of Silk Road to Serve Iran’s National Interests: Official
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines Gholam Hossein Shafei said the revival of the ancient intercontinental Silk Road trade route could serve the Islamic Republic’s national interests.
Addressing a meeting of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) in Tehran on Saturday, Shafei pointed to the initiative of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (the B&R Initiative) and said the route would pass through 20 major cities from northeast to northwest Iran.
“The revival of this road in a modern way can guarantee Iran’s national interests,” he said, adding that the Silk Road project can boost Iran’s economic relations with regional countries.
The official went on to say that urban planning as well as cultural and economic exchanges with other countries would also flourish through implementing this project.
The 29th Meeting of the ICAPP Standing Committee opened in Tehran on Friday.
About 100 leaders and senior officials from 40 political parties and organizations from 25 Asian countries, as well as officials from regional and international organizations, have attended the two-day event.
The Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road is a development strategy proposed by Chinese Government that focuses on connectivity and cooperation between Eurasian countries, primarily the People's Republic of China (PRC), the land-based Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB) and the ocean-going Maritime Silk Road (MSR).
